Blueberry Puff Pastry Tarts Ingredients
Puff pastry: Pre-made dough that becomes the base of the tarts. I used the Signature Select brand, but Pepperidge Farms brand is also a great choice.
Blueberries: The star of the show! You can use fresh, frozen, or canned (pie filling) depending on your preference.
Lemon zest: This adds a citrusy zip to brighten the flavor.
Sugar: Mainly for fresh blueberries to add sweetness. Pie filling usually has enough already.
Flour: This helps thicken the juices from fresh blueberries to prevent a soggy crust. Not needed with pie filling.
Butter: This adds richness and flavor to mimick a fresh-baked blueberry pie flavor.
How to Make Blueberry Puff Pastry Tarts
Heat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Give your muffin tins a quick spray with nonstick baking spray to prevent sticking.
Unfold the puff pastry and grab a knife. Cut it into 9 squares for a total of delicious treats. Repeat with another sheet of puff pastry if you have one, for a grand total of 18!
Gently press a square of dough into each muffin tin cup. Fill each one with 2 tablespoons of your favorite berries or store-bought pie filling.
Pop them in the oven and bake for 18-22 minutes. You'll know they're done when they're golden brown and puffed up.
Let them cool for 10 minutes before taking them out of the tin. Then, enjoy your warm and sweet blueberry creations!
FAQS
Do I need to thaw puff pastry before baking?
Yes, absolutely! Thawing frozen puff pastry ensures it unfolds easily without cracking. A partially thawed or frozen puff pastry will be difficult to work with and won't puff up properly.
Does puff pastry need to be pre-baked for these tarts?
No, typically puff pastry doesn't need pre-baking for dessert recipes. The muffin tin will heat up to bake the bottoms of the tarts until crisp and golden-brown ensuring these are properly baked.
Fresh, frozen, or canned blueberries?
Any of the three would work well, but fresh is best! Fresh blueberries will give a more vibrant flavor and texture. Frozen berries can be used straight from the freezer and mixed with the additional ingredients without thawing. Canned blueberry pie filling is sweet and ready to use in a pinch.
Can I use other fruit?
Absolutely! You can substitute any kind of berry, or fruit filling you'd like. Jam or preserves can also be used in a pinch, but choose a thicker variety for better consistency.
Recipe Tips
For a crispy crust - Keep the puff pastry cold while working with it. If it gets warm, it won't puff up as much.
Egg wash for shine - Brush the edges of your tarts with an egg wash (egg beaten with a splash of water or milk) before baking for a deeper golden-brown color.
Sugar for sweetness: Sprinkle the tops of the tarts with powdered sugar once cooled for presentation and extra sweetness.
