The classic flavor of sausage, onions, and peppers is melded into a cream cheese sauce and finished with parmesan. These appetizer cups will be a crowd-pleaser at your next party and go quickly!
Last week I was making my favorite Sausage Stuffed Mushrooms recipe and I had extra filling left over. I had extra wonton wrappers on hand and thought it would be lovely to bake the filling in the wrappers. Boy, that was a great decision because the result was a crispy golden-brown treat that baked perfectly to hold the savory filling.
For years, I have always turned to wonton wrappers baked in a muffin tin to hold a variety of sweet and savory foods. I love how versatile they are, as well as how inexpensive they are to use for party foods.

Vegetables – Green pepper, onion, and fresh garlic were used to create a tasty, classic flavor.
Cheeses – Both freshly grated parmesan and cream cheese were used to create this creamy, delicious stuffing.
Spices – Paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, ground black pepper, and salt were used to season the filling.
Herbs – Fresh parsley was used as a garnish, and can also be used in the filling.
How to Make Cheesy Sausage Wonton Cups
Preheat oven to 350F. Line two 12-count muffin tins with doubled wonton wrappers. Spray wrappers with olive oil or avocado oil cooking spray. Bake for 5-6 minutes. Wontons will be golden brown and feel firm; set aside.
Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned and cooked through. Drain any excess grease. Add the chopped onion and cook for 5-7 minutes or until softened and translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute, until fragrant. Season with black pepper, salt, and paprika.
Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the softened cream cheese and grated Parmesan cheese until well combined.
Using a cookie scoop or tablespoon, add the sausage mixture evenly into each pre-baked wonton cup.
Return to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes at 350F.
Serve immediately and garnish with additional parsley or green onion if desired. Enjoy!

Can I make these ahead of time?
Wonton Cups:
- Bake and Store: Bake the empty wonton cups for about 5-7 minutes or until lightly golden brown. Let them cool completely, then store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a day. When ready to serve, fill and bake or fry according to your recipe.
- Freeze Empty Cups: Bake the empty cups for about 5 minutes to set the shape. Let them cool completely, then flash-freeze them on a baking sheet for about an hour. Once frozen solid, transfer them to a freezer bag or container for up to 3 months. Thaw completely before filling and cooking.
Filling:
- Cook and Store: Cook your sausage filling according to your recipe. Let it cool completely, then store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat gently before filling the wonton cups.
- Freeze Filling: Let the cooked and cooled sausage filling cool, then portion it out into freezer bags or containers. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw completely in the refrigerator before using.
Important Note:
- Don't fill the wonton cups in advance! Pre-filled cups will get soggy as the wonton wrappers absorb moisture from the filling. Fill them just before baking or frying for the crispiest results.
